Sony to discontinue physical PlayStation disc production starting in 2028

Sony Group has decided to end physical disc production for its PlayStation video game consoles starting in January 2028. With this decision, consumers will access games through digital downloads via the company's online store.

In a blog post published by the company, it was stated that the preference for digital media has significantly outpaced physical discs. Sony Interactive Entertainment described this move as a natural part of the process of adapting to consumer trends.

The statement noted, "This transition will allow us to more closely align with how the majority of our community prefers to access and play games today."

Sony reported that the change will not affect games scheduled for release before the beginning of 2028. It was noted that these games will continue to be sold in disc format.

The company also pointed out that the trend of shifting from physical discs to digital platforms continues in the entertainment industry. In a separate announcement, it was announced that the digital stores for the older generation PlayStation 3 console and the PS Vita handheld console will be closed soon.
