Tensions between Fortnite and Apple flare up again
Epic Games' popular game Fortnite has been blocked on the iOS platform due to restrictions by Apple. This situation has brought the long-standing dispute between the two companies back to the agenda.
The conflict between Apple and Epic Games began in 2020 when Epic Games challenged the App Store rules. Epic attempted to integrate its own payment system to bypass the 30 percent commission Apple charges on in-app purchases, which led Apple to remove the game from the store and suspend Epic's developer account.
THE REMOVAL OF FORTNITE FROM iOS
Epic Games announced that Apple is not allowing it to publish Fortnite in stores in the US and Europe. This decision has made the game unplayable on iOS devices worldwide. Epic Games described this situation as "unfair censorship" and made the following statement: “Because Apple has blocked our Fortnite application, we cannot publish the game. As long as the Apple block remains, Fortnite will not be playable on iOS.”
COURT DECISIONS AND FUTURE STEPS
Court documents that emerged last month showed that Apple violated the decision made in 2021. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers criticized Apple's anti-competitive stance, stating, "Apple's anti-competitive behavior can no longer be tolerated." Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated that Apple has not responded to their applications, expressing that the Fortnite update is in jeopardy. Apple, while complying with the court order, announced that they would appeal: “We disagree with the decision, but we are committed to the legal process. We will file our appeal.”
