The biases of algorithms: Could diversity and the platform economy be the solution?
Altınbaş University has opened a discussion on the effects of algorithms in the business world. In a seminar titled "Algorithmic Organizations and Diversity," the ways in which algorithms reproduce biases in working life were addressed. The seminar's guest, Prof. Dr. Patrizia Zanoni from Hasselt University, emphasized that algorithms are not neutral and explained how they systematize societal biases within the business world.
HOW DO ALGORITHMS AFFECT DIVERSITY?
Prof. Zanoni stated that diversity in the business world is not limited to interpersonal discrimination, drawing attention to how organizational structures shape differences. Noting that the algorithms of large technology companies reproduce pre-existing inequalities, Zanoni provided examples of how women were prevented from seeing certain job advertisements on platforms such as Facebook and Google.
COULD THE PLATFORM ECONOMY BE THE SOLUTION?
According to Zanoni, despite the biases inherent in algorithms, the platform economy could provide equal opportunity. Stating that the European Commission views the platform economy as a model to increase labor force participation, Zanoni expressed that digital work platforms offer new economic opportunities for those living in rural areas, individuals with disabilities, and workers in developing countries. However, she also pointed out that these new employment models require regulation in terms of social security and wage policies.

Zanoni stated that when digital technologies are designed fairly, they can increase social inclusion and economic equality. However, she emphasized that for this to happen, algorithms must be carefully regulated and corporate data policies must be transparent.
