The dollar era on Steam hits game sales
Steam, the world's most popular online gaming platform, began accepting payments in dollars in Turkey as of last month. This decision has severely impacted game sales in Turkey.
It appears that Steam's shift to accepting payments in dollars has significantly affected game sales in Turkey. According to data shared by Dora Özsoy, founder of Stratera Games, sales of the company's game, Cardboard Town, experienced a serious decline during the dollar-payment period. According to Özsoy's data, daily sales of the game, which were around 90 before the switch to dollar payments, dropped to as low as 13 following this change.
According to a report by Eray Kalelioğlu from Webtekno, it seems likely that other game developers will also experience similar declines now that Steam has begun accepting payments in dollars in Turkey. According to statements by Dora Özsoy, the revenue Cardboard Town generated from Turkey fell from 22 percent of its global revenue to 3 percent. This situation indicates that the transition to a dollar-based payment system has negatively impacted game sales in Turkey.
However, there is a point that should be noted. Özsoy's data only covers the game Cardboard Town, and it is noted that other factors may have also played a role. For example, during the process of Steam beginning to use the dollar, Cardboard Town sales might have risen to 1,400 compared to the previous period. In this case, it was noted that the game's potential customer base may have reached a saturation point, which could explain the decline in sales.
