The sky is entrusted to it: Turkey's 'Steel Dome' move

Important decisions were taken at the August 6 meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Committee.

In the statement made after the meeting, the new name of the air defense project carried out by ASELSAN, which ranges from radar to software and from defense strategy to missile and launch systems, was announced as "STEEL DOME".

The project's name was initially set as "GÖKKUBBE" (Sky Dome), but the name of the entire system, which emerged with a full air defense approach, was changed to "STEEL DOME." This name brought to mind Israel's famous air defense system, the Iron Dome.

AI-SUPPORTED AIR DEFENSE

In its statement, the Defense Industry Executive Committee emphasized that the STEEL DOME is a structure that will protect not just a specific region, but all of Turkey.

The statement included the following: "The STEEL DOME Project, which we are developing domestically and nationally, ensures that all our sensors and weapons work integrated with each other under a network structure with our layered air defense systems, creates a common air picture, delivers it to operation centers in real-time, and presents it to decision-makers with artificial intelligence support." Development projects for software, missiles, radar, and other systems and subsystems for air defense were also discussed.

The statement also noted that the current status of projects regarding the development of space access capability for aviation and space projects, the National Combat Aircraft KAAN, and swarm-capable kamikaze, mini unmanned aerial and naval vehicle projects were evaluated.

It was stated that the procurement of armed variants of BAYRAKTAR, TB3, AKINCI, and AKSUNGUR unmanned aerial vehicles, command control, communication and information management systems, tactical wheeled armored patrol vehicles and weapon carrier vehicles, as well as various land vehicles, coastal tugboats, and boat systems were discussed.

Regarding development projects, systems to increase situational awareness on land, in the air, and at sea, electronic warfare systems, mini/micro unmanned aerial vehicles, and defense system projects against swarm-capable kamikaze unmanned naval vehicles were addressed.

Projects regarding the modernization of tanks and fighter jets in the inventory with domestic and national resources, the development of engine and power transmission systems for air and naval vehicles, and the establishment of infrastructure for quantum technologies were also evaluated and approved.

A DOMESTIC AND NATIONAL ASSET

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz shared the following on his social media account regarding the Steel Dome project:

"Today, the Defense Industry Executive Committee, in addition to many critical projects, discussed and decided on the Steel Dome Project, which we are developing domestically and nationally, ensuring that all our sensors and weapons work integrated with each other under a network structure with our layered air defense systems, creates a common air picture, delivers it to operation centers in real-time, and presents it to decision-makers with artificial intelligence support. I wish this historic decision to be beneficial."
