TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, have agreed to a $100 million settlement in a legal process conducted with the U.S. state of Alabama. The agreement includes new practices aimed at limiting the time children and young users spend on the platform.
As part of the settlement, TikTok will introduce a 2-hour daily usage limit for children and young users in Alabama. The platform will also implement measures to restrict access during nighttime and school hours, age verification systems, and new tools to strengthen parental controls.

The lawsuit was filed due to features alleged to be designed to keep young users on the app for longer periods. According to the agreement, TikTok will make it harder for adults to find the accounts of young people, alert parents to suspicious interactions, and remove cosmetic filters aimed at children.
The company is expected to make the initial $100 million payment within 45 days. If the terms of the agreement are not met, TikTok could face additional penalties of up to $300 million to Alabama. The platform has been granted up to one year to complete the regulations.
