Uncontrollable thoughts may be a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Stating that the inability of individuals to cope with constantly recurring thoughts (obsessions) and the repetition of certain behaviors (compulsions) to prevent or alleviate these thoughts is defined as obsessive-compulsive disorder, Psychiatrist Dr. Dilek Günaydın said, “Obsessive-compulsive disorder can negatively affect a person's quality of life by impacting their daily life, functionality, and social relationships.”

Today, many people struggle with mental health issues. One of these issues is a mental disorder defined by experts as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which is characterized by the individual's difficulty in coping with recurring thoughts. Psychiatrist Dr. Dilek Günaydın from Medical Park Ordu Hospital provided information about obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Stating that the symptoms of OCD can vary from person to person, Specialist Dr. Günaydın said, “Obsessions are intrusive, repetitive obsessive thoughts, images, or urges. Obsessions are involuntary and uncontrollable. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce or prevent obsessions. These behaviors can often be irrational or excessive. For example, a person with a contamination obsession may wash their hands constantly to alleviate the worry of germs spreading; someone with a checking compulsion may check the door lock repeatedly, thinking they left it open; and someone with a counting compulsion may not feel comfortable without counting the cars passing by on the road.”

“IT CAN BECOME CHRONIC IF NOT TREATED”

Expressing that while the exact cause of OCD is not fully known, factors such as childhood trauma, personality traits, and serotonin dysregulation can influence the development of the disease, she said, “OCD is seen in 2 to 3 out of every 100 people. While it is seen more frequently in women than in men, it can start at an earlier age in men. Although it usually emerges during adolescence and in the 20s to 30s, it can be seen at any age. When OCD is not treated or treatment is interrupted, obsessions and compulsions take up a significant place in a person's life and consume more of their time. Thus, the person's quality of life begins to decrease, and their life becomes restricted. OCD is a disease with a high probability of becoming chronic, which is why its treatment is important.”

IT IS NECESSARY TO CONSULT EXPERTS

Specialist Dr. Dilek Günaydın shared the following regarding treatment options for OCD, which can restrict life and carries the risk of becoming chronic:

“Psychiatric medications and psychotherapy are involved in the treatment of OCD. Psychiatric medications and psychotherapy can be used alone or in combination. While significant benefits are seen with medication, the recurrence of the disease is also prevented, especially with a type of psychotherapy called 'Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.' With appropriate treatment, it is possible to manage symptoms and improve a person's quality of life. If you are also experiencing symptoms of OCD, you can seek help by consulting a psychiatrist. Experts can determine the most effective treatment plan by conducting an appropriate assessment.”
