US record labels file lawsuit against 2 AI companies

Major US record labels have announced that they have filed a lawsuit against companies they accuse of using unauthorized content to develop their artificial intelligence (AI) systems. 

In a statement from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), it was stated that the firms Suno and Udio, which produce music with the help of artificial intelligence, used copyrighted content belonging to major record labels without permission to develop and train their AI systems.

The statement reported that a group of record labels, including Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music, and Warner Records, filed a lawsuit against the two companies in question on the grounds of copyright infringement and are seeking damages of up to 150 thousand dollars for each piece of content used without authorization.

Uncharted Labs, the developer of Suno and Udio, recently launched AI programs that allow users to generate songs from text prompts.

SONY MUSIC HAD WARNED

American music company Sony Music had warned technology companies in May not to use their songs without permission to develop their artificial intelligence systems.

The company had requested that about 700 firms answer questions such as which songs were used to develop their AI systems, how the songs were accessed, and how many copies of the songs were made.
