US, South Korea, and Japan discuss cooperation in artificial intelligence

US, South Korean, and Japanese officials met at the 3rd economic dialogue meeting held to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and supply chains.

According to a report by Yonhap, citing a statement from the South Korean Presidential Office, South Korean Deputy National Security Advisor for Economic Security Wang Yun-jong, Senior Director for Technology and National Security at the US National Security Council Tarun Chhabra, and Cabinet Councilor at the Japanese National Security Secretariat Yasuo Takamura met at the economic dialogue meeting held in the city of Busan.

The national security officials of the three countries discussed efforts to increase cooperation in supply chains, emerging technologies, and digital fields. Additionally, topics regarding strengthening cooperation through the Minerals Security Partnership and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) were discussed.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WAS AMONG THE TOPICS

At the meeting, it was agreed to facilitate joint research on new technologies by state research institutes, and the issue of artificial intelligence governance was addressed.

The leaders of the US, Japan, and South Korea have agreed to "work closely on cybersecurity threats and data security issues." It was reaffirmed that the Camp David Summit, held on August 18 last year, was an opportunity to increase trilateral economic security cooperation.

The leaders of the US, South Korea, and Japan met at a trilateral summit in Camp David last year to address the threat posed by North Korea. Following the summit, a commitment was made to expand trilateral cooperation in various fields against security threats in the Pacific.
