WHO IS YAĞIZ KAAN ERDOĞMUŞ?
He was born in Bursa in 2011. In 2019, he became the European Champion in the 8-year-old category. After becoming a Candidate Master (CM) among FIDE titles in 2021, he qualified to become Turkey's youngest International Master (IM) in 2022 by completing the necessary norms within the same year. He was deemed worthy of the "Athlete of the Year" award at the "Giants of Sports Meet" awards ceremony organized by Ülke TV.
He received his first Grandmaster (GM) norm with his successful performance at the Chessable Sunway Sitges Chess Festival. Yağız Kaan guaranteed his second GM norm with 2 rounds remaining in the final of the Jeddah International Chess Festival Young Masters Tournament, held in Saudi Arabia between January 23 and 31.
Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş earned the GM title by completing his final norm at the Grenke Chess Open on April 1, 2024. According to the International Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings, Yağız Kaan became the youngest GM among active chess players. Yağız Kaan (12 years, 9 months, 29 days) ranked 4th on the list of the youngest Grandmasters (GM) in world chess history. With Yağız Kaan, the number of grandmasters in Turkey rose to 16.
Reaching 2569 Elo points in the live rating system with his performance at the Sharjah Masters 2024 tournament, Yağız Kaan broke the 2555 Elo record that Judit Polgar had reached at age 13, which had remained unbroken for 34 years.
