A first in nearly 16 years: Leon Marchand breaks Michael Phelps' record at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

An Olympic record was broken today in the swimming events held at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Finals were held for the men's 400m individual medley, men's 100m breaststroke, and women's 100m butterfly at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

In the men's 400m individual medley, French swimmer and reigning world record holder Leon Marchand managed to break the Olympic record held by Michael Phelps (4:03.84) for 15 years, 11 months, and 18 days with a time of 4:02.95.

In this discipline, Tomoyuki Matsushita finished second with a time of 4:08.62, while American Carson Foster placed third with a time of 4:08.66. 

TWO SILVERS IN THE 100M BREASTSTROKE

An interesting event occurred in the men's 100m breaststroke final. While Italian Nicolo Martinenghi won the gold medal with a time of 59.03, the reigning world and Olympic record holder, Briton Adam Peaty, and American Nic Fink tied for the silver medal with the same time of 59.05.

In the women's 100m butterfly, American Torri Huske won the gold medal with a time of 55.59, while Gretchen Walsh, who broke the Olympic record in the semifinals, took silver with 55.63, and China's Yufei Zhang won the bronze medal with 56.21.
