Acun Ilıcalı's club is living a nightmare

Maribor, the historic Slovenian club, has missed out on European competition for the first time in 18 years under the management of Acun Ilıcalı.

Maribor, one of the leading teams in Slovenian football, has experienced a significant disappointment as it concludes its latest season. The club, which was acquired by Acun Ilıcalı in 2024, finished the Slovenian 1st League in 5th place, losing its chance to qualify for European competitions. A 2-1 defeat away to Mura in the final week became the symbol of this poor run.

Maribor recorded 14 wins, 8 draws, and 11 losses in the 33 matches it played this season, finishing the league in 5th place with a total of 50 points. Considering that the club finished the league in 2nd place last season and secured a ticket to Europe, this year's performance has saddened its fans. Maribor last missed out on Europe in the 2006/07 season. Thus, for the first time in 18 years, the club has been deprived of the opportunity to participate in one of the continent's prestigious organizations.

It remains a matter of curiosity how Maribor, which is always seen as a favorite for the championship and the top spots in the Slovenian league, will respond to this decline in the coming period.

''EYES SET ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE''

Despite the unsuccessful season for Acun Ilıcalı at Maribor, things are going well for his investment in England, Hull City. The English team will face Southampton in the Championship play-off final. The team that wins this critical match to be played on May 23 will experience the joy of promotion to the Premier League and will have the opportunity to earn approximately 300 million euros in revenue. It is known that Ilıcalı has turned his attention to Hull City for now and is working hard to achieve success in England.
