Argentina fans call for World Cup final replay: Number of signatures exceeds 50 million

Following Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final, the reaction from fans has turned into a petition campaign. In the campaign launched on Change.org, it is stated that the number of signatures has exceeded 50 million while demanding that the final match be replayed.

In the final played on Sunday evening, Spain reached the trophy with a goal by Ferran Torres at the end of 120 minutes of play. The Argentine side argues that some of the decisions made by referee Slavko Vicnic were particularly controversial.

The organizers of the petition claim that the match was not played under fair conditions and are calling for FIFA to review the referee's decisions and order a replay of the final.

While the campaign text includes serious allegations against the referee, there is no official decision from FIFA regarding these claims that has been reflected to the public.

Nevertheless, the possibility of the final being replayed is considered very low. It is known that FIFA has not tended to order match replays based on similar online campaigns in the past. Still, the number of signatures the campaign has reached has revealed the scale of the reaction among Argentine fans.
