The Argentina national team, which reached the final by defeating England 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, may face disciplinary action due to a banner incident that occurred after the match.
It was reported that after the match at Atlanta Stadium, Argentine players Giovani Lo Celso and Nicolas Otamendi held the "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banner that was unfurled in the stands and later laid it out on the pitch. The phrase translates to "The Falkland Islands are Argentine."
According to the regulations of FIFA and the football rule-making body IFAB, the display of political flags, slogans, and symbols on the pitch is not permitted. If the banner is deemed political in the match report, a disciplinary process could be initiated against Argentina.
The Argentine Football Association was fined 20 thousand pounds by FIFA in 2014 for displaying a banner with the same message before a friendly match played against Slovenia.
Having reached the final, Argentina will face Spain in the tournament's last match on Sunday, July 19.
