The English side's goals were scored by Ollie Watkins in the 13th minute and McGinn in the 56th minute. Lille's goal scored by Gudmundsson in the 64th minute was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Diakite reduced the deficit to 1 for the visiting team in the 84th minute.
Aston Villa won the match 2-1 and gained an advantage ahead of the return leg to be played on Thursday, April 18.

The host team's goal was scored by Vetlesen in the 6th minute. Brugge missed a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
