Decision to leave from Xavi at Barcelona!
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has decided to leave the club following a 5-3 defeat to Villarreal. The 44-year-old manager stated, "I will leave the club on June 30. This is a decision I have made after talking with the president and the staff. Barcelona needs a change."
In the 22nd week of La Liga, Barcelona hosted Villarreal at home.
The Catalan side fell 2-0 behind but turned the match around to lead 3-2. However, they conceded goals in the 84th, 90+9th, and 90+12th minutes, leaving the pitch with a 5-3 defeat.
Following the shocking loss, manager Xavi Hernandez made the decision to leave.
Speaking at the press conference held after the Villarreal match, Xavi said he would step down from his position at the end of the season.
In his statement, Xavi said, "I will leave the club on June 30. This is a decision I have made after talking with the president and the staff. Barcelona needs a change. Despite everything, I think we can still have a very good season. I need to think about the club before myself. I think this decision will help the players and the club. I don't want to be an obstacle for Barcelona. I want to thank President Joan Laporta. He is a great person."
"I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEFEAT"
Speaking to DAZN after the Villarreal match, Xavi said that this defeat was embarrassing for them.
In his statement, Xavi said, "We lost because of our mistakes. The penalty is not an excuse. I am responsible for the defeat. There is no explanation for losing a match we deserved to win. The team is very affected, but we need to recover from this."
THE GAP WITH THE TOP HAS WIDENED
Barcelona, which finished last season as champions in La Liga, has remained far from the top this season.
After 22 weeks, Barcelona has dropped points in 8 matches and has collected 44 points.
Sitting 10 points behind leaders Real Madrid, Barcelona is in third place, 8 points behind second-placed Girona.
