Dutch league team relegated

The KNVB, which oversees Dutch football, announced that Vitesse has received a record points deduction for failing to comply with licensing regulations. The club, which has spent the last 35 years in the top flight of Dutch football, was accused of providing incorrect information required for authorities to investigate potential sanctions violations.

The Royal Dutch Football Association has received a restructuring plan, although it has not yet been approved.

With only four matches remaining, the club sits at the bottom of the Eredivisie with -1 point due to the 18-point penalty.

"VITESSE MUST NOT CEASE TO EXIST"

Interim general manager Edwin Reijntjes admitted that the penalty was inevitable.

The statement from the club read:

"Although this is a dark day for everyone and everything that cares about Vitesse, this is the bitter reality. Ultimately, such a penalty was inevitable. On the other hand - and I really want to make this clear to everyone - we are extremely happy with the opportunity offered to us to keep our license. This was hanging by a thread. However, it is clear from the response given by the Licensing Committee that there is confidence in the new direction of the club. We are committed to this and will continue. I have said it before: Vitesse must not and cannot cease to exist!"

VITESSE WILL NOT APPEAL

Vitesse stated that they will not appeal the licensing committee's decision to impose sanctions on them. Furthermore, they had reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League but were defeated 2-1 on aggregate by the eventual champions, Roma.
