Ergin Ataman reacts to racist messages on social media
Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman has made strong statements against the racist attacks he received on social media, expressing that he is proud of his Turkish identity.
Ergin Ataman, who continues to serve as head coach at Panathinaikos AKTOR, made a statement that created a stir following the EuroLeague match played against Virtus Bologna. The experienced coach said that he had been subjected to racist attacks by some Greek fans on social media directed at him and his country.
Regarding the reactions he encountered on social media, Ataman stated, "There are some people on my social media who start attacking me. They do this specifically towards my country. They send me messages attacking me and mentioning that I am Turkish. They say that because I am Turkish, I should leave Greece. They say that I am very bad for Panathinaikos."
The 60-year-old head coach, while embracing his Turkish identity, did not neglect to use positive expressions regarding Greece and the club he works for. Ataman expressed his feelings with these words: "I am proud to be Turkish, but I also love Greece, Athens, and Panathinaikos. I am here for success, that is why I am here."
Emphasizing that their goals for this season are significant, Ataman also touched upon team spirit. The experienced coach said, "I showed my fist at the beginning of the match because I am always together with them. There is a synergy that needs to be captured with the fans, the players, the technical staff, and the club; we will reach great goals all together."
While the events that took place and the racist attacks were on Ataman's agenda, he underscored that they are determined to continue fighting and achieving their goals with Panathinaikos.
