Former Fenerbahçe manager Ersun Yanal made striking remarks regarding İsmail Kartal, who decided to resign after the Champions League match against Roma and later returned to his post following the management's efforts to persuade him.
Commenting on the process during a YouTube broadcast, Yanal stated that as someone who has managed Fenerbahçe, he could understand the situation Kartal is in. However, he argued that what has transpired would not be easy for the club to recover from, stating, "I said this after the Gençlerbirliği match. The pitcher is broken. It's over. If Fenerbahçe has played 4 matches and suffered two defeats, it's over. This won't recover. You will see."
Yanal expressed that the resignation decision following the Roma match could not be seen merely as a momentary reaction. The experienced manager said, "If a resignation decision comes after a match as valuable as a victory, after a well-played match, this is a thoroughly considered and planned affair. I am telling you; he would have resigned even if they had won."
Stating that those in leadership positions at Fenerbahçe should behave differently during moments of crisis, Yanal criticized Kartal's decision with the words, "There was a wrong attitude here. A leader of Fenerbahçe does not behave like this. He should not behave like this."
In his statements, Yanal also touched upon the atmosphere of pressure within the club, reminding that he had assessed after the Gençlerbirliği match that "mobbing has begun at Fenerbahçe." Saying that taking responsibility at Fenerbahçe requires serious mental resilience, Yanal used the term "medical report" for this process.
Recalling the defeats Fenerbahçe suffered in recent weeks against Gençlerbirliği and Beşiktaş, Yanal also took a jab at club president Aziz Yıldırım. Criticizing İsmail Kartal for leaving by saying "I will never return" and then starting the job again, Yanal argued that a manager must show a stance.
"If you are İsmail Kartal, and you return after saying 'I will never return,' then İsmail Kartal must have a line and a stance. You are harming Fenerbahçe. You must know how to leave, how to come, how to sit, and how to stand, my brother."
Using a military analogy to describe the managerial role, Yanal said that the leader figure is decisive in the team's on-field reflexes. He stated that it is debatable how effective a commander can be in the same role after saying "I am not here."
Following his remarks on the broadcast, Ersun Yanal also shared a post on his social media account, quoting the video of his speech and stating, "In the end, Aziz Yıldırım will fire İsmail Kartal with great pleasure..."
