Fenerbahçe commemorates Can Bartu, known as 'Sinyor'

Fenerbahçe Sports Club shared a post on the anniversary of the death of Can Bartu, nicknamed "Sinyor," who passed away on April 11, 2019.

The message stated, "Our Sinyor, our CAN... We commemorate our legend Can Bartu with respect, love, and longing on the 5th anniversary of his passing."

WHO IS CAN BARTU?

Can Bartu was born on January 31, 1936, in Istanbul.

A former Turkish national basketball player and former national football player, Bartu became the first Turkish footballer to play in a European cup final, having taken the field in the final match played between Fiorentina and Atlético Madrid on May 10, 1962. 

Called "Sinyor Bartu" by Italian fans, Bartu secured his place among the unforgettable figures of Turkish football.

Bartu, whose name is written in the history of Fenerbahçe Sports Club alongside both basketball and football, is the first and only athlete to have worn the Turkish national team jersey in both basketball and football. On the same day, Bartu scored 28 points in a basketball match against Galatasaray, and also played in a football match at Dolmabahçe, where he scored a goal.

Can Bartu, who appeared in 26 matches for the national team, contributed 6 goals in those 26 matches. Bartu also played for Lazio, Fiorentina, and Venezia, in addition to Fenerbahçe.

Can Bartu, who retired from football in 1970 and began a career in sports journalism, worked as a football commentator for various media outlets. He passed away on April 11, 2019.
