Fenerbahçe defeats Galatasaray in basketball derby
In the derby match played during the 16th week of the Women's Basketball Super League, Fenerbahçe Opet defeated Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring 65-61 away from home.
With this result, the yellow-navies continued their undefeated streak with 13 wins in 13 games, while the yellow-reds suffered their 3rd defeat of the league.
Starting the match well with consecutive three-pointers from Vanloo, Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring led 11-3 at the 3rd minute. Fenerbahçe Opet, finding baskets from the paint and behind the three-point line to go on a 7-0 run, narrowed the gap to 1 point at the 5th minute: 11-10. Facing a yellow-red team that committed turnovers, the yellow-navies took the lead in the 7th minute: 13-14. The home team, having regrouped and using the paint effectively, widened the gap again with consecutive points from the free-throw line and finished the first quarter ahead 22-14.
The second period began with baskets from both sides, and Galatasaray finished the 15th minute leading 30-26. Finding consecutive points with Charles, Fenerbahçe took the lead as the 16th minute ended: 30-31. Scoring from the paint with Li, the yellow-red team gained a 5-point advantage in the 19th minute: 36-31. The visiting team, finding baskets by using the painted area in the final part of the quarter, entered the locker room leading 37-36.
REACHED VICTORY IN THE FINAL PERIOD
The second half began with a low-tempo game. While both teams struggled to find points from the paint, Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring led 47-42 at the 26th minute with outside shots from Vanloo and Gökşen Fitik. Responding to the consecutive baskets by Meesseman for Fenerbahçe Opet with Zandalasini, the home team finished the 29th minute leading 53-48. Finding baskets from the paint with Fraser, the yellow-reds entered the final period leading 55-48.
Effective with Ayşe Cora, who entered the game in the final quarter, Galatasaray finished the 35th minute leading 60-55 against a Fenerbahçe side that committed turnovers. Finding their rhythm on defense and producing consecutive baskets from the paint with Atkins and Meesseman, the yellow-navies went on a 6-0 run and took the lead in the 38th minute: 60-61. Against the home team, which struggled to change the scoreboard in the final period of the derby match, the visiting team found a three-pointer with Sevgi Uzun and won the match 65-61, having entered the final minute leading 64-60.
In Fenerbahçe Opet, Tina Alexandria Charles's 24 points and Sevgi Uzun's 12 points played an important role in the victory.
For Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring, Julie Vanloo's 15 points and Cecilia Zandalasini's 10 points were not enough to win.
