Galatasaray has decided to take action with UEFA regarding the match referee, Espen Eskas, following their 3-1 defeat against Sporting Lisbon in the first week of the Champions League.
The yellow-red club believes that the Norwegian referee's decisions during the match influenced the course of the game. Following the match, head coach Okan Buruk and Yunus Akgün also expressed their reactions to the referee's performance.
Many things happened outside of football today. There is a referee who directly influenced the match with a very clear red card and a penalty that shouldn't have been. The VAR referee was probably not at the stadium today. He didn't get involved in anything. I wish he had come to the match and informed the referee about both the red card and the fact that it wasn't a penalty. There are many yellow cards that were not given.
Within the Galatasaray camp, the penalty decision and the card management were particularly subjects of debate. Evaluating the match afterward, Yunus Akgün argued that the decisions made during the period when the team was still in the game disrupted the balance.
In the application Galatasaray will make to UEFA, it is expected that objections regarding the referee's decisions in the Sporting Lisbon match will be formally submitted in the file.
