Starting with the 20th week of the Süper Lig, the use of foreign VAR referees was implemented. The cost of foreign VAR referees to the TFF has also been revealed. It is alleged that foreign referees earn twice as much as Turkish referees.
Following refereeing controversies in Turkish football and increasing complaints and demands from clubs, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) decided to appoint foreign VAR referees for matches.
Foreign VAR referees began serving with the Hatayspor - Galatasaray match, which was the opening game of the 20th week of the Super Lig.
With the introduction of foreign VAR, its cost also became a subject of curiosity. It has been alleged that foreign referees earn more than Turkish referees.
According to a report by Sözcü newspaper, while local VAR referees earn 26 thousand TL (approximately 710 Euros) per match, foreign referees are paid 1,400 Euros per match.
Additionally, travel expenses are covered by the TFF. This money will be deducted from the clubs' receivables.
Meanwhile, it drew attention that the VAR referee for the Hatayspor - Galatasaray match, Belgian Jan Boterberg, was also appointed to the Gaziantep FK - Bodrum FK match played the following day.
Thus, the Belgian referee earned a total of 2,800 Euros for the two matches.
