The father of Liverpool's Colombian footballer Luis Diaz, who had been kidnapped by the ELN, has been released.
Luis Manuel Diaz, the father of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz, who plays in the English Premier League, has been released after being kidnapped by the armed rebel group National Liberation Army (ELN).
According to a report on the El Tiempo website, Luis Manuel Diaz, who was announced to have been kidnapped by the ELN on October 28, was handed over to intermediaries in the rural area of the city of Valledupar, in the Cesar department.
The armed rebel group ELN handed Diaz over to a humanitarian delegation consisting of the Ombudsman's Office, the United Nations (UN), the Catholic Church, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Diaz was taken by military helicopter to the La Guajira department, where his family lives.
Family members and neighbors of Diaz expressed great joy upon hearing the news.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also expressed his satisfaction on his X social media account, stating, "Long live freedom and peace."
The parents of footballer Diaz, who plays for Liverpool, were kidnapped by ELN members on October 28 while traveling in their vehicle in the town of Barrancas. The footballer's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, had been released shortly after.
