Handball-style in football: 10-minute penalty on the agenda

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) continues its efforts to make a groundbreaking decision at the meeting to be held in London on November 28. The issue of a "sin bin" penalty against intense dissent towards referees is also on the agenda.

IFAB intends to make changes regarding intense dissent towards referees and the penalty kick rule at the meeting a week from now.

10-MINUTE PENALTY

It has been stated that IFAB, which is preparing to take steps to prevent the recent increase in intense dissent towards referees, is working on a '10-minute sin bin penalty'.

IFAB CEO Lukas Brud stated in his remarks on the subject that players are generally not afraid of receiving a yellow card for dissent towards the referee, but that a 10-minute sin bin penalty could change this situation.

IT COULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Brud said, "Players might not worry too much about 'Will I get a yellow card?' when they say something inappropriate to the referee, but if they think they will be out for 10 minutes of a 90-minute match, their approach could make a big difference."

At the same time, Brud emphasized that the responsibility for communicating with referees should be given only to team captains, stating that this method has been successful in rugby and basketball.

If this rule is implemented, we may see a version of the penalty in football similar to the 2-minute suspension for players in handball.
