Harry Kane: We struggled to put pressure on the ball
Following England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, Harry Kane said, "We struggled to put pressure on the ball. I am very sorry for my teammates. I am very sorry for our fans. I am very sorry for our coaching staff."
Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final after coming from a goal down, setting up a final match against Spain.
Thomas Tuchel's side failed to avenge their 1986 World Cup loss and were eliminated from the tournament.
The goals that secured the victory for Argentina were scored by Enzo Fernandez in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martinez in the 90+2nd minute.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Kane stated the following:
"We struggled to put pressure on the ball. Especially in the first half and at the beginning of the second half, we pressed them well, we put enough pressure to win the ball high up, which gave us the chance to win the ball and control the game a bit better.
After the goal, whether it was them pushing more men forward or us not being able to match them man-to-man, it was just wave after wave of attacks. Once we were one-nil up, it felt like we were just trying to hold on, which is not enough at this level.
I am very sorry for my teammates. I am very sorry for our fans. I am very sorry for our coaching staff.”
