A high-scoring start to the European Championship

Germany achieved the largest margin of victory in an opening match in the history of the tournament, which is being held for the 17th time this year.

By beating Scotland 5-1 in the opening match of EURO 2024, Germany secured the largest margin of victory in the history of the championship.

In the previous 16 European Championships, the largest margin of victory had been Italy's 3-0 win over Turkey at EURO 2020.

THE OPENING MATCH WAS HIGH-SCORING AGAIN

Football fans witnessed goals in the 17th opening match in the history of the European Championship as well.

In the 16 previous opening matches of Europe's most important football tournament at the national team level, teams found the back of the net 42 times. In 11 of those matches, 2 or more goals were scored.

The 17th European Championship also began with plenty of goals. Germany did not break the tournament's opening tradition by defeating its opponent 5-1.

The only opening match in the history of the championship that ended without a goal was the Italy-Soviet Union match at EURO 1968.
