IFAB takes action, football rules are changing

IFAB held a meeting today and announced new rules for football. With the new rule, if goalkeepers hold the ball for more than 8 seconds, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team. Under the previous rule, the limit for goalkeepers to hold the ball was 6 seconds, and the penalty was an indirect free kick.

Here are the changes made:

-If a goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than 8 seconds (provided the referee counts down with their hand), the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team.

-If a team official, substitute, substituted player, or a player temporarily off the field touches the ball while leaving the field of play, and there is no intent for unfair interference, an indirect free kick without disciplinary sanction will be awarded.

-In competitions, the referee now has the option to make an announcement after a VAR review or a long VAR check.

-IFAB supported the commitment to test body cameras worn by match officials in FIFA competitions. FIFA confirmed its intention to implement body cameras as part of live match broadcasting at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

WHEN WILL THEY COME INTO EFFECT?

These decisions made by IFAB will come into effect starting from the FIFA Club World Cup, which will begin on June 14, 2025. Football fans are eagerly awaiting the date these rules will take effect and the FIFA Club World Cup to be played in the summer.
