Fenerbahçe began their Trendyol Süper Lig season with a 2-1 defeat away to Gençlerbirliği. While the unexpected result caused disappointment within the yellow-navy community, it was learned that head coach İsmail Kartal sent a message to his players in the dressing room after the match, focusing on the Lyon game.
In his post-match assessment, Kartal addressed the reasons for the defeat, pointing out the simple mistakes his team made. The experienced coach noted, "We gave the ball away to the opponent and conceded a goal. On the second, someone got between the center-backs and scored." highlighting the defensive weaknesses.
It was reported that Kartal tried to boost his players' morale in the dressing room. Emphasizing that the result was not worthy of Fenerbahçe, Kartal reportedly reminded them that they are only in the first week of the league and have a long marathon ahead.
The yellow-navy coach reportedly stated that the team must concentrate on the Lyon match in a short time. It was noted that Kartal highlighted Fenerbahçe's longing for the Champions League, which has lasted since 2008, and emphasized the goal of bringing that excitement back to the fans.
The goal for Fenerbahçe is to quickly put the effects of the poor start in the league behind them and gain an advantage in the critical match to be played in Kadıköy.
