Jockeys decide to boycott: Their names absent from declaration lists for Istanbul races
Jockeys taking action over working conditions, pay policies and personal rights have decided not to take part in the Istanbul races.
The boycott launched by jockeys in horse racing on the grounds that their demands regarding working conditions, pay policies and personal rights have not been met was reflected in the Istanbul program. It was seen that jockeys’ names were not included in the declaration lists for the Istanbul races to be held on Wednesday, July 8.

In the declarations announced by the Turkish Jockey Club (TJK), it was stated that apprentice riders, meaning young rider candidates, would ride in the races at İstanbul Veliefendi Hippodrome instead of jockeys. Sector representatives assess that the decision could have negative consequences for the sporting competition and prestige of the races.
The Jockeys’ Association stated that the boycott decision does not target any person or institution, and that the process could be reassessed if demands are met and an agreement is reached. Following the decision, talks among sector representatives are said to be continuing.
DEMANDS FOCUS ON BONUS RIGHTS
In a joint statement issued by jockeys and apprentice riders before the boycott, it was argued that serious losses in bonus rights had occurred with the amendment made to the Horse Racing Regulation in 2018. The statement said the TJK’s commitment to return to the former bonus rates had not been fulfilled for more than seven years, and that no results had been achieved from talks with the TJK and the Racehorse Owners’ Association.
If an agreement is reached, the racing program is expected to return to its normal flow. However, if no agreement emerges, it is stated that the boycott could become more wide-ranging.
Jockey Ahmet Çelik, who has won the Gazi Race 8 times, also emphasized in a statement on his social media account that their reaction is not directed at horse owners. Çelik said, “Our struggle is not about fighting with anyone, but about receiving the reward for our labor and our rights. Please let’s not divert the issue from its purpose.”
