Kurt Hamrin, the last surviving player from the 1958 World Cup final, has died
Swedish footballer Kurt Hamrin, the last surviving player to have appeared in the 1958 World Cup final, has died at the age of 89.
In a statement, the Swedish Football Association said, "Swedish football has lost one of its greatest masters. It was not just his career, his goals, his assists, and his performance on the right wing that made Hamrin an unforgettable legend. He was a loyal and popular person in every team he played for. Swedish football remembers Hamrin with great warmth and gratitude."
The right-winger Hamrin played for AIK and IFK Stockholm in his home country, and for Juventus, Padova, Fiorentina, Milan, and Napoli in Italy. The Swedish footballer, who won the European Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup, and the Italian Serie A title once each with Milan, also achieved two Coppa Italia victories and one European Cup Winners' Cup title with Fiorentina, where he spent the brightest period of his career.
HE PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN HIS TEAM REACHING THE FINAL
With 190 goals, Hamrin ranks 9th among the highest-scoring players in Serie A history.
Hamrin, who scored 17 goals in 32 matches for Sweden, played a major role in his team reaching the final by finding the back of the net 4 times in the 1958 World Cup. Sweden lost 5-2 in the final of the tournament they hosted to a Brazil side featuring names such as Pele, Garrincha, Vava, and Mario Zagallo.
