Mbappé openly states his Ballon d’Or claim: 'Who would I vote for? Myself'
Real Madrid's French star Kylian Mbappé has defended his chances in the Ballon d’Or race, drawing attention to his individual performance.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has made striking remarks regarding the Ballon d’Or race. The French star stated that he has no intention of staying in the background for the award, adding that his individual performance this season makes him one of the strong candidates.
According to excerpts from an interview with France Football magazine, which will be published in full at a later date, Mbappé said, "I have a feeling that I could win it this year, so I haven't moved away from this goal." The 25-year-old footballer emphasized that the Ballon d’Or remains among his short-term goals.
Mbappé also responded to criticisms highlighting his lack of team trophies as a factor against his candidacy. Reminding that the Ballon d’Or is an individual award, the French forward argued that the evaluation should be based on the personal level a player displays on the pitch.
“Who would I vote for? Myself. But I also understand those who vote differently, because we are not in a dictatorship of thought. When I look at the arguments and the competition, I say that winning the award would not be a robbery.”
The French player also pointed to his World Cup performance as one of his most important pillars in the Ballon d’Or race. Stating that finishing the tournament as the top scorer and winning the Golden Boot was a major achievement, Mbappé said, "History should always be rewarded."
It is noted that the award race is progressing without a clear favorite this year. With France Football set to announce the 30-man shortlist for the 70th Ballon d’Or shortly, Mbappé's statement has reignited the debate.
In the race, where the evaluation period runs until July 19, Rodri, who was named the best player of the tournament at the World Cup, is also considered one of Mbappé's prominent rivals. However, Mbappé finishing the season without winning a major trophy with Real Madrid and the French national team is considered his most significant disadvantage on the path to the award.
