Play-off statement from Mehmet Büyükekşi
Turkish Football Federation President Mehmet Büyükekşi spoke at the European Club Association (ECA) meeting. Stating that Super Lig clubs did not find the play-off conditions suitable, Büyükekşi said, "There is no play-off on our agenda right now."
The European Club Association (ECA) meeting was held in Istanbul, hosted by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
Speaking to AA before the meeting, TFF President Mehmet Büyükekşi said, "Today, we are hosting the European Club Association meeting in Istanbul. We are very pleased about this. The format of European cups has changed starting from next season. The acting general secretary of UEFA and executives of clubs in Europe and Turkey are here. A presentation will be made to them, and they will explain the format in detail."
"WE CAN CATCH THEM"
Reminding that Turkish football has risen from 20th to 9th place in the UEFA country coefficient rankings in the last 2 years, Mehmet Büyükekşi continued his words as follows:
"Next season, we will compete in European cups with 5 teams. Having five teams will be much more important for the country coefficient. There is no huge point difference between the 6th, 7th, and 8th teams in the country coefficient rankings. We can catch them. The position Turkey will take here is extremely important. This meeting will also be enlightening for the position we will take from now on. One of the most important things in football is to develop new relationships. We see these meetings as extremely beneficial in terms of strengthening bilateral relations with UEFA and European club executives."
"THE SUPER LIG WILL REACH ITS IDEAL FORM"
TFF President Mehmet Büyükekşi stated that a play-off system for the championship in the Super Lig is not on their agenda and noted the following:
"Currently, our league champion participates in the Champions League, and the team that wins the Turkish Cup participates in the Europa League. We have changed the format of the Turkish Cup starting from next season. We are making the cup more exciting. We had the Hypercube company conduct a study on whether there should be a play-off in the Super Lig. Since our clubs did not find the resulting play-off conditions suitable, there is no play-off on our agenda right now. One of our goals is to reduce the Super Lig to 18 teams. After dropping to 18 teams, we will continue our path without play-offs. This year 4 teams, next season 4 teams, and the following season 3 teams will be relegated, and the Super Lig will reach its ideal form."
