Mircea Lucescu has passed away

It was revealed in recent days that manager Mircea Lucescu had been hospitalized. The University Hospital of Bucharest had announced to the public that manager Mircea Lucescu had suffered multiple strokes and was experiencing a serious acute vascular occlusion.

Mircea Lucescu, the former manager of the Turkish National Football Team, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş, has passed away at the age of 80.

Galatasaray's statement read, "We have learned with deep sadness that Mircea Lucescu, who brought another European trophy to our country with the UEFA Super Cup he won and who served as the manager of our team during our 15th championship, has passed away. We extend our condolences to Mircea Lucescu's family, his loved ones, and the football community. We will not forget you, Lucescu."

Beşiktaş Club shared the following: "We have learned with great sadness that our former manager, the architect of our championship in our centenary year, Mircea Lucescu, has passed away. We will never forget you, Lucescu; rest in peace. Goodbye Luce."

WHO IS LUCESCU?

Mircea Lucescu was born on July 29, 1945, in Bucharest. He was a Romanian former footballer and manager. He is one of the most decorated managers of all time.

During his playing career, Lucescu won the Romanian League title 7 times with Dinamo București. In his managerial career, he won the UEFA Super Cup with Galatasaray and the UEFA Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk. He won championships in Turkey with different teams in consecutive years. He won a total of nine Ukrainian League titles, eight with Shakhtar Donetsk and one with Dynamo Kyiv.

Lucescu was named Manager of the Year in Romania in 2004, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2021, and Manager of the Year in Ukraine in 2006 and between 2008 and 2014. In 2013, he was awarded the Manager of the Decade in Romania, and in 2015, he became the fifth person to manage 100 UEFA Champions League matches, alongside names such as Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti, Arsène Wenger, and José Mourinho. He ranks second behind Ferguson with 35 points in terms of the number of official trophies won.

The Romanian Football Federation had announced on April 2 that they had parted ways with Lucescu.
