Mourinho's move against Turkey: Complaint filed with the ECHR

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has taken the process regarding the disciplinary penalties he received during his time in the Süper Lig to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The application of the experienced coach, who signed with Fenerbahçe in 2024 and parted ways with the yellow-navy club last August, has been accepted by the ECHR.

ECHR REQUESTS DEFENSE

Following Mourinho's application, the European Court of Human Rights has requested an official defense from Turkey. Thus, the Portuguese manager's complaint regarding football jurisdiction in Turkey has been brought to the international legal agenda.

PENALTIES CAME AFTER TRABZONSPOR MATCH

Jose Mourinho's application is based on the penalties imposed by the Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK) following the match Fenerbahçe played against Trabzonspor in November 2024.

The PFDK had issued a decision for a ban on entering the locker room and hundreds of thousands of liras in fines against Mourinho. These sanctions were later upheld by the Turkish Football Federation Arbitration Board.

ALLEGATIONS OF LACK OF INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

It is stated that in the application made to the ECHR, Mourinho made assessments that the football judicial mechanisms in Turkey are not independent. The Portuguese manager also claimed that his freedom of expression had been violated.

ARGUED THAT THE REASONED DECISION WAS NOT SERVED

Another of Mourinho's objections in the application file was that the reasoned decision was not served to him. The experienced manager argued that his right to a fair trial was violated for this reason.

TURKEY HAS A SIX-MONTH PERIOD

There is a maximum period of six months for the defense process that the ECHR has requested from Turkey.
