National athletes qualify for Paris 2024
At the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships hosted in Antalya, Salih Korkmaz and Meryem Bekmez finished 20th with a time of 3:05:33, setting a personal best. The national athletes secured a quota for Paris 2024 in the inaugural mixed relay marathon event.
The final event of the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships, hosted in Antalya with the participation of 431 athletes from 52 countries, featured the mixed relay marathon, held for the first time in the history of the organization.
THEY QUALIFIED
The Turkish team, consisting of Salih Korkmaz and Meryem Bekmez, competed in the race held at the EXPO 2016 site. The duo of Salih Korkmaz and Meryem Bekmez finished 20th with a time of 3:05:33, setting a personal best. With this result, the national team succeeded in securing a quota for Paris 2024, where only 22 teams will be able to participate.
In this discipline, the Italy 2 team, consisting of Francesco Fortunato and Valentina Trapletti, won gold with a personal best time of 2:56:45; the Japan team, consisting of Koki Ikeda and Kumiko Okada, won silver with a personal best of 2:57:04; and the Spain team, consisting of Alvaro Martin and Laura Garcia-Caro, won the bronze medal with a time of 2:57:47.
With these results, the teams of Italy 2, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Spain 2, Ukraine 3, France, Spain 3, China 2, China, Colombia 2, Germany, Colombia, Australia 2, Japan 3, India, Mexico 2, Turkey, Slovakia, and Ukraine 2 will compete for medals in the mixed relay race, which will be held for the first time at Paris 2024.
