National tennis player Zeynep Sönmez advances to the 2nd round
National tennis player Zeynep Sönmez has advanced to the second round of the WTA 500 Berlin Open Women's Tennis Tournament after defeating Dutch player Arantxa Rus 2-1 in the first round of the main draw.
The 22-year-old Zeynep Sönmez, who qualified for the prestigious tournament—which features top-10 WTA players such as Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, Jessica Pegula, Qinwen Zheng, Elena Rybakina, and Marketa Vondrousova—has made a strong start in the main draw.
Zeynep Sönmez defeated world number 58 Rus 2-1 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes, with set scores of 6-3, 2-6, and 1-6, securing her place among the 16 tennis players in the second round.
The national athlete will face the winner of the match between world number 9 Maria Sakkari and world number 19 Victoria Azarenka in the second round.
World number 157 Zeynep Sönmez achieved a historic success last week by qualifying for the main draw of the French Open (Roland Garros), the second grand slam tennis tournament of the season.
