New rules coming to football

Football matches, which reach millions of spectators, are occasionally improved with new rules to increase the time the ball remains in play and to elevate the viewing experience.

The International Football Association Board has announced the new steps they have taken in this regard. IFAB plans to announce all the changes at its general assembly meeting this week.

Here are those announced rules:

A player who leaves the field due to injury will not be able to return for at least 1 minute.

A countdown will be applied to goal kicks and throw-ins. If the time is exceeded, the ball will be given to the opposing team.

Players substituted out will be required to leave the field within 10 seconds.

Red cards issued from a second yellow card will be subject to VAR review.

Corner kicks will be subject to VAR review.
