Okan Buruk's 'German' referee complaint to UEFA: 'We expect an Azerbaijani referee'
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk criticized the officiating of German referee Daniel Siebert following their 3-2 loss to Swiss side Young Boys in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League play-off round.
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk made a press statement following the Young Boys match.
Pointing out that they were in the German-speaking canton of Switzerland, Buruk stated that they expected an Azerbaijani referee to be appointed for the match in Istanbul, while criticizing the officiating of German referee Daniel Siebert.
'WE WOULD BE HAPPY IF A TURKISH-SPEAKING AZERBAIJANI REFEREE OFFICIATED'
Criticizing the management of the match by German referee Daniel Siebert, the experienced manager continued his remarks as follows:
We ask the players to jump for the ball, to lift one leg, and to keep both arms closed. This is a very difficult thing. It is against the laws of physics. The referee gave a penalty for this. One must respect this. I think the first yellow card given to Abdülkerim was wrong. Unnecessary yellow cards were shown to both teams at the beginning of the match. The game stopped a lot.
It even took the referee 1 minute just to write down a yellow card. I saw a distracted, thoughtful referee who could not manage the game. We are in the German canton of Switzerland. Our opponent speaks German and a German referee is officiating the match. He is a referee who previously had issues with one of our players at the World Cup. We, too, expect an Azerbaijani referee for the second leg. We would be happy if a Turkish-speaking Azerbaijani referee officiated our match.
