Orkun Kökçü breaks his silence after derby red card
Beşiktaş player Orkun Kökçü shared a post on his social media account, apologizing to the Beşiktaş community for the red card he received in the Fenerbahçe derby.
In the derby match played during the 11th week of the Süper Lig, Beşiktaş was defeated 3-2 by its arch-rival Fenerbahçe, despite having taken a 2-0 lead.
Orkun Kökçü, who left his team with 10 men after receiving a red card for a harsh foul on Edson Alvarez in the first half of the match, made a statement on his social media account to apologize to the Beşiktaş community.
Kökçü used the following expressions in his statement titled 'Great Beşiktaş Family':
"I wanted to weigh what has happened over the last few days within myself and be alone with my thoughts. Wearing the Beşiktaş jersey means more than just stepping onto the pitch; it means carrying the responsibility of millions. With this awareness, I chose to think first instead of speaking immediately after what happened.
Unfortunately, the decision I made in the excitement and emotion of the game left our team in a difficult situation. I am sincerely experiencing the sadness of this.
"IT WAS A MATCH WHERE MISFORTUNES CAME ONE AFTER ANOTHER"
However, I also know that football is a collective game and results are a combination of many factors. It was a match where, for us, misfortunes came one after another that day. Of course, there are many points to discuss, for example, how we displayed a superior game on the pitch until that moment. This was actually a strong sign showing what we can do when we want to. Sometimes wanting too much can cause you to make mistakes. This was an important reminder for me.
"WE ARE ALL AWARE THAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH A DIFFICULT PERIOD"
We are all aware that we are going through a difficult period. But we are a big family, and we know how to solve our problems together within this family. Without paying attention to the voices coming from the outside, we will continue on our path by clinging to the bond, unity, and belief within ourselves. I, too, will make my inferences from these events and do more than my part. I thank everyone who supported me, criticized me, and made me feel the greatness of this community once again."
