Osman Aşkın Bak had said 'They will be held accountable': Election process begins in sports federations following gold-medal-less Olympics

Turkey finished the major event in 64th place, winning 8 medals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. While the results caused disappointment, it was the first time in 40 years that no gold medal was brought home from the Olympics.

In his statement regarding the Olympic results, Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak, who did not take responsibility but instead targeted the federations of the relevant sports branches, had used the following expressions: "The state provides the means. As the Republic of Turkey, we have offered the highest level of opportunities to our sports federations. These opportunities we provide do not exist in many countries around the world. It is not just us saying this, but the entire international sports community. Despite this, the federations that could not use these opportunities correctly and efficiently will be held accountable for this."

With the end of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the election process has begun in sports federations.

According to the law, sports federations affiliated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports are required to hold their ordinary elective general assemblies within 3 months after the Olympic Games end.

59 sports federations, excluding the Turkish Ski Federation, Turkish Ice Hockey Federation, Turkish Ice Skating Federation, and Turkish Curling Federation, which operate in winter sports, will hold their elections within 3 months.

The official 3-month period began on August 11, the date Paris 2024 concluded.

While some federations have announced their election dates, those whose election dates are not yet determined are required to announce their calendars shortly.
