Returning to the courts at the Brisbane International after nearly a year away due to injury, Nadal faced Australian player Thompson in the quarterfinals.
Thompson defeated Nadal, who holds 22 Grand Slam titles in his career, with sets of 5-7, 7-6, and 6-3 to advance to the next round.
Thompson will face Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals.
