Real Madrid demands compensation from UEFA

In a statement released by the Spanish club, it was noted, "We welcome the decision of the Madrid Provincial Court to reject the appeals filed by UEFA and La Liga. This ruling confirms that UEFA, in line with the European Court of Justice's decision regarding the European Super League, has seriously violated the European Union's free competition rules by abusing its dominant position."

The statement also emphasized that the decision paves the way for the compensation of the significant damages suffered by Real Madrid, adding, "The club announces that it will continue to work for the good of global football and its fans, while demanding compensation from UEFA for the major damages it has incurred."

EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE INITIATIVE

On April 19, 2021, clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham from England; Milan, Inter, and Juventus from Italy; and Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid from Spain announced the launch of the European Super League initiative. According to the initial format, 15 founding clubs would be permanent members of the 20-team league, while others would be determined based on their performance criteria in their respective leagues.

Following harsh reactions from FIFA, UEFA, and the sports community, 9 clubs—excluding Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus—announced their withdrawal from the organization. UEFA and FIFA had warned that the three teams that did not withdraw from the formation could face sanctions, such as being expelled from their organizations and national leagues, and being banned from sending players to international matches.

Following these events, the matter was taken to the European Court of Justice. The European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA and FIFA's opposition to the establishment of the European Super League was contrary to competition law and the freedom to provide services.
