Referee for Austria-Turkey match sparks controversy: 6 matches, 6 defeats

The Portuguese referee for our National Team's EURO 2024 Round of 16 match against Austria, Artur Soares Dias, has drawn attention due to his statistics against Turkish teams.

In his career, Dias has officiated 6 matches involving our National Team and clubs, and in all 6 of those matches, the opponents emerged victorious. Under Dias's officiating, our A National Team played 3 times, our U21 team once, and Fenerbahçe and Eskişehirspor once each, with only 3 goals scored in total.

Former FIFA-badged referee Fırat Aydınus drew attention to Artur Soares Dias in his column for the newspaper Hürriyet.

Aydınus's statements are as follows:

"Artur Soares Dias, who was appointed to the EURO 2024 Round of 16 match that our National Team will play against Austria, has already been declared a 'jinxed referee' because we have lost every single match of our clubs and national teams that he has officiated to date.

I will be frank; I feel uneasy about this referee. Having previously officiated the Poland-Netherlands (1-2) and Denmark-England (1-1) matches in the tournament, Dias appears to be a referee who likes to let the game flow and does not shy away from showing yellow cards.

As of the end of the past season, the Central Refereeing Committee (MHK), which reached an agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation to provide Video Assistant Referee (VAR) support, has hopefully at least analyzed this referee's officiating style and provided information to the national team officials."
