The new head coach of the Romanian national team has been announced

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has reached an agreement with the country's legendary football figure Gheorghe Hagi for the head coach position following the sudden loss experienced by the national team. At the signing ceremony held at Casa Fotbalului, FRF President Razvan Burleanu and the new head coach Hagi made statements to the press.

President Razvan Burleanu stated that they have signed a contract with Hagi valid until 2030, emphasizing that their main goal is participation in Euro 2028.

Burleanu also expressed that they aim for success in the Nations League group in the upcoming period and spoke as follows: “Hagi's goal is to participate in EURO 2028, which will be hosted by England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and to win the Nations League group that will take place in the autumn of this year. This is a 4-year contract; our main goal is to participate in the next final tournament, the European Championship. We want to win the Nations League because, as you know, the last victory there gave us the chance to play in the World Cup play-offs. Our second goal is to win every match. As you know, our relationship with Mr. Hagi has been good for a long time. We wanted to cooperate at the first representative level during these years. There were people who joined the FRF management from the club managed by Mr. Hagi. Now a window of opportunity has opened because the problems regarding the conflict of interest with his team have been eliminated.”

Gheorghe Hagi expressed his pride in taking charge of Romania once again with these words: “It is an honor and a great responsibility to represent Romania once again. I did it as a player, I hope I will do it as a head coach.”

Hagi had left his last position at the Viitorul team in his country in 2025 and decided to take a break for a while.

The legendary football figure had also coached the Romanian national team in the early years of his coaching career. Additionally, Hagi had served as the head coach of Galatasaray in two different periods.

On the other hand, the A National Football Team recently succeeded in reaching the final by defeating Romania 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers play-off semi-final.
