Şahika Ercümen breaks Turkish record at Freediving World Championship

The Freediving World Championship, held in Kalamata, Greece, is taking place between October 2 and 13, 2024, with the participation of 140 athletes from 40 countries. The breathtaking competition continues in various disciplines of freediving. National athlete and World Freediving Record Holder Şahika Ercümen, who is competing in Greece representing Turkey with the National Team, set a new Turkish record in the constant weight without fins category. Şahika, who also held the previous record, wrote her name into the record books by completing 82 meters in this category in 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

Şahika Ercümen said, "It was a long season and this World Championship is the final competition of the year. Therefore, I am quite tired and unfortunately, I had health issues before coming here. Despite this, I wanted to represent our country. I am very happy to have emerged from the water today by breaking the Turkish record despite all the setbacks. The femicides that have occurred in our country in recent days have deeply affected me, as they have all of us, and these women were in my mind and heart during today's dive. I wanted to dedicate my dive to the end of femicides. The competition continues, and I thank everyone who supports me."

The Freediving World Championship will conclude with the medal ceremony to be held on October 12.
