Manager Şenol Güneş made statements regarding the choice of manager for the A National Football Team and the upcoming Trabzonspor-Beşiktaş match.
Attending an event organized by the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, Güneş answered a question about having a foreign manager at the helm of the national team. The experienced manager stated that, emotionally, he favors domestic names, saying, "Speaking from an emotional standpoint, I want both the players and the coach to be Turkish. We should be able to produce and find our own coaches."
Stating that there are young managers in Turkey capable of taking on this role, Güneş also emphasized that he does not find an exclusionary approach toward foreign coaches to be correct.
In his assessment of the subject, Güneş said, "I am not asking why the foreigners came, and I do not find such othering to be right. However, our own people can achieve success. I was the worst one, and I still finished third in the World Cup. That means the others will do even better."
Having served at both Trabzonspor and Beşiktaş, Şenol Güneş said he sees the home team as having the advantage for the Trabzonspor-Beşiktaş match to be played this evening. Güneş said, "I am looking at the Trabzonspor-Beşiktaş match neutrally. Trabzonspor is playing at home, so I see them as more advantageous. I know it will be a good match."
