Serdal Adalı reacts to VAR and refereeing
Beşiktaş President Serdal Adalı made striking statements regarding the penalty decision and refereeing following the derby match against Fenerbahçe.
Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş faced off in Kadıköy during the 28th week of the Süper Lig. The match ended in a 1-0 victory for the yellow-navy blues, thanks to a penalty goal scored by Fenerbahçe in the final minutes. Following the match, the penalty decision and the implementation of VAR, in particular, became a subject of debate.
REACTIONS INTENSIFY AFTER THE DERBY
Beşiktaş President Serdal Adalı stepped up to the microphones after the match to express his sharp criticism of the refereeing and the management of the VAR system. Stating that administrative decisions, rather than the result on the pitch, are negatively impacting Turkish football, Adalı voiced his dissatisfaction specifically regarding the Central Referee Committee (MHK) and the VAR system.
Adalı called for the officials to resign, stating, "The other 17 teams are complaining about VAR just as much as we are. As long as the MHK President and his deputy continue like this, there is no chance for Turkish football to move forward even an inch. If they had any shame, they would resign tonight and get off the back of Turkish football."
"FENERBAHÇE DOES NOT NEED SOMETHING LIKE THIS"
Pointing out that Beşiktaş has no remaining title aspirations in recent weeks, Adalı emphasized that VAR decisions and referee errors are acting as obstacles for teams. The experienced executive said, "They already cleared us out 3-4 weeks ago. Do we have any claim in the league? No. Does Fenerbahçe need something like this? No. This MHK must now get off the back of Turkish football. We are tired of the VAR disaster every week," expressing his belief that the system is not fair.
Following the controversial decisions in the derby, criticisms directed at VAR and referee management from both clubs and football fans have once again come to the fore. It was observed that Beşiktaş fans, in particular, expressed their reactions intensely on social media.
While Fenerbahçe took an important step in the championship race with this victory, it seems that refereeing decisions will continue to create controversy in the Beşiktaş camp just as much as the match score itself.
