Fenerbahçe has made a striking move in Europe with the transfer of Mason Greenwood, who plays for Marseille. It was reported that the yellow-navy blues reached an agreement for the 24-year-old English footballer for a transfer fee of 39 million euros and signed a contract with the player until 2030.
According to a report by Sabah, Greenwood's preference was the deciding factor in the transfer process. Despite Atletico Madrid's offer of 40+5 million euros and Al Ahli's offer of 50 million euros, the English player's desire to play for Fenerbahçe weakened Marseille's hand at the negotiating table.
SIMEONE INTERVENED
On the Atletico Madrid side, it was stated that head coach Diego Simeone intervened but did not receive the response he expected. It was noted that after the player did not respond to the message Simeone sent to Greenwood for two days, the Spanish team's appetite for the transfer diminished, and Atletico Madrid withdrew from the race on Monday evening.
Following these developments, it was stated that Marseille had to take the player's preference into account despite the existence of higher offers. Thus, Fenerbahçe reached a conclusion in the transfer that had been on their agenda for a long time.
Greenwood also sent a message to the yellow-navy blue fans before boarding the plane. The English footballer said, “Hello Fenerbahçe fans. I want to thank you for the support you have shown me in recent weeks. I am very happy to be here. I can't wait to get started. I hope we can have a great season. Let's go.”
