Statement from Beşiktaş regarding the 'punch attack on a journalist'

The statement issued by the Beşiktaş club is as follows:

"Announcement from the Beşiktaş JK Board of Directors: To the Great Beşiktaş Family, we are following the process very closely regarding Sezgin Gülnar, a son of our community, who was arrested following an argument that broke out after a message was written by a fanatic posing as a journalist—whose state of intoxication has been confirmed by a forensic report—directed at our President and Second President.

Our lawyers and executives are in communication with all relevant units. The target here is not a member of the press, but rather a disrespectful message that has nothing to do with the journalism profession or its principles; it is a form of verbal harassment and provocation, which is another type of the social violence that threatens our country every day.

"WE ARE WATCHING WITH ASTONISHMENT"

Although we wish for everyone to learn a lesson from this process and for it to conclude without harm, we are watching with astonishment as pressure is being exerted on the matter in favor of a certain community.

Our priority is to stand by Sezgin Gülnar and to ensure that the mandatory legal rules of the Republic of Turkey are applied to Sezgin Gülnar as well, so that he may return home as soon as possible.

Until this process is over, no steps should be taken that could cause further harm to our son. Our restraint from making any statement that would mean interference with the judiciary so far should not be understood as us not exercising our rights.

We invite all administrative, judicial, and authorized institutions and organizations related to the incident to apply our laws and conduct an impartial investigation. Let no one have any doubt that in the coming stages of this process, we will track who those involved in the incident—from referees to journalists—are serving and for what purpose, and we will share this with our community and our nation.
